There are numerous historic towns and cities in Central Portugal to go and explore, where every large town seems to have a castle or monastary. Tomar and Coimbra are well worth a visit.
Irf you are looking for religious architecture there aree the monasteries at Alcobaca or Batalha as well as the pilgrimage site at Fatima.
The coastline consists of seemingly endless white sandy beaches with several popular resorts which can get very busy in Summer months, particularly in August. In between the resorts there are several smaller and quieter beaches.
Inland there are several river beaches and national parks with a range of attractions including caves, dinosaur prints and ancient Roman cobble stoned roads.

Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is a natural park in Portugal. It has been a protected area since 1979 and intends to protect the natural aspects and the architectonic heritage existing in the Serra de Aire and Serra dos Candeeiros; Comprises an area of 38 900 ha. It contains parts of the municipalities of Alcanena, Rio Maior, Santarém, Torres Novas and Ourém (in Santarém district) and Alcobaça and Porto de Mós (in Leiria district).
